SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs - A Day Like Any Other Edition

We here at SuperPhillip Central LOVE video game music. We've been creating a library of sorts, featuring the best music to come from our beloved hobby. Today we have five new themes of sensational quality to add to our ever-expanding list. Such franchises represented are Resident Evil, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Cruis'n. Enjoy!

v596. The Adventures of Rad Gravity (NES) - Title Screen

There are few NES games with title themes that get our toes tapping and leaves an impression on us. There's Mega Man 2, for instance, and its iconic theme. One supremely underrated title screen theme comes from The Adventures of Rad Gravity, a truly unappreciated gem in the NES's library. Take a listen and see what you've been missing.

v597. Resident Evil: Director's Cut: Dualshock (PS1) - Mansion Basement

It was rumored that the composer of this version of the original Resident Evil was deaf. If he can create music full of such glamorous ambiance, imagine his composing ability if he could hear! The theme presents the player with an intense feeling of dread, perfect for Resident Evil.

v598. Cruis'n USA (N64) - Cruis'n USA

We would do anything to be able to dance to this music at a rave. It seems absolutely perfect for such an occasion. Showcasing the Nintendo 64's true-to-life sound capabilities, Cruis'n USA's titular theme was way ahead of its time without any doubt.

v599. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - Nocturne

While Cruis'n USA showed off the power of the Nintendo 64's sound card, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, created by the brilliant, never-failing Bioware, pushes the Nintendo DS' sound card to its fullest capabilities. Nocturne is a superb take on Sonic the Hedgehog 3's final boss theme. If you aren't shaken up by this version, then nothing will ever faze you.

v600. Crazy Bus (GEN) - Title Screen

Perhaps this is too sophisticated of a pick for many, but we definitely are enamored with the avant garde direction the maker of Crazy Bus went with the music. While it's not to the level of The Adventures of Rad Gravity, we do find Crazy Bus to have a memorable and entertaining title screen theme all the same.

SPC's Favorite VGMs - Dark Brotherhood Edition

Video game music is something that has transcended just being "background music" or "ambient noise." No, it's gotten progressively greater with songs using real instruments, orchestras, and choirs. Don't get us wrong, we love the old chiptune music as well, and the limitations did not hamper terrific compositions. Today's edition of SPC's Favorite VGMs is a special one. We'll be taking a glimpse at a game with a grand soundtrack. It's one of our personal favorites from the Nintendo DS: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. We have five (count 'em-- five) tracks that will get your toes a-tappin'.

v346. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - Central City

Ah... Central City. That name sounds familiar to SuperPhillip at least. Anyhow, this catchy remix of Sonic 3D Blast's (the Genesis version) Diamond Dust Zone gets the body brewing happiness all over. The instrumentation is quite good for the Nintendo DS, a system barely more powerful than a Game Boy Advance.

v347. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - Nocturne

Man, the memories of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are just flooding back to us. If you are looking for an especially tense and intense tune, then Nocturne (unofficial name) is the track you are definitely, most certainly looking for.

v348. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - Battle Music 3

Now, these track names are purely unofficial. No legitimate titles were ever given to them. When you have a sensational battle theme such as this one, you don't really need to pleasantries of having a name attached, do you? Maybe you do, so we're going to call this track "Epic Awesomeness."

v349. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - Boss Battle

Oh, we have another battle theme to share with you, but this time it's for some of the big bad boss encounters Sonic and his team of brigands enter into. This track also comes from Sonic 3D Blast, but this time it's the PC/Saturn version of Panic Puppet Zone.

v350. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - Ix - Final Battle

Battles in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood took quite a while to complete. That is one of the sore spots of this game. The music, on the other hand, never fails to amuse and impress. This final boss theme has Sonic and the gang tackling the cybernetic creature Ix. It feels like we're in the midst of a radical rave!

We hope you enjoyed this look at the music of Sonic Chronicles. The majestic quality of the soundtrack is one that resonates as a top-tier score, especially for a Sonic game. Next week we'll be back with even more terrific tune-age. Until then, why not check out our VGM Database for every past song spotlighted? Oh, and while we're on the subject... April Fools! Seriously, the music you just heard is god awful. We could hardly type what we did with a straight face.

SPC's Favorite VGMs will be back to normal next week with the real VGM volumes 346-350! Did we get your proverbial goat with this one? We think we got ourselves with this one, now that we think about it...
