SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs - Merry Christmas 2015 Edition

Let SuperPhillip Central be the 131st site to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas! While the site may be late wishing you a happy holidays, at least we have a gift for you unlike those other sites! It's the gift of song with this special edition of SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs. Yep, it's a double dose of this recurring weekly segment, specially packaged for Christmas!

All of the songs featured have some winter and Christmas charm to them. We start with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its Ice Cap Zone Act 1 theme. We then go trekking through a winter wonderland with Mario in Super Mario 64. The Blue Bomber feels Blizzard Man's icy wrath with a song from Mega Man 6. What concludes this special holiday edition of SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs are songs from Sonic 3D Blast and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble.

Once your stomach is full from Christmas dinner, why not rest up by your computer and listen to past VGM volumes and games featured with the SPC VGM Database?

v1036. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (GEN) - Ice Cap Zone Act 1

We seem to have an influx of Sonic the Hedgehog, with Sonic and the Black Knight being the last VGM volume of our last edition of the old VGMs. That's okay, as if I had to listen to music from any gaming series, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise's music would be near the top of my list. With this 1036th VGM volume we delve into the treacherous terrain of the Ice Cap Zone, a popular zone within Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Merry Christmas, Sonic!

v1037. Super Mario 64 (N64) - Cool Cool Mountain

Borrowing the Slider theme melody from the same game, Super Mario 64's Cool Cool Mountain plays in two levels within the game. The first is this titular one, while the second is in the final third of the game, played during Snowman's Land. There are few games that do winter well while leaving players with great memories. Super Mario 64 is one of them.

v1038. Mega Man 6 (NES) - Blizzard Man Stage (Complete Works)

Blizzard Man was one of the eight Robot Masters that Mega Man had to take down in the final NES Mega Man release, Mega Man 6. Mega Man 6 offered some nice innovations to the old Blue Bomber formula, such as multiple path levels, something that some later Mega Man games would possess. The entire package was given the Blue Bomber charm with a super catchy and likable soundtrack, something that the series is definitely well known for. Well, WAS well known for.

v1039. Sonic 3D Blast (SAT, PC) - Diamond Dust Zone Act 1

Sonic 3D Blast had two soundtracks written for the game. The first was the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version, while the other, and the one I vastly prefer, was the Sega Saturn and PC version. From the sleigh bells, tubular bells, brass, and pizzicato strings, Sonic 3D Blast's Diamond Dust Zone Act 1 is indeed like hearing a Christmas jingle as you explore the level's winter wonderland.

v1040. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble (SNES) - Jangle Bells

Wrapping up this edition of SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs like a Christmas present is a bonus game melody from Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble, the final of the original DKC trilogy for the Super Nintendo. Using a cheat code, in bonus games, all of the collectible doodads would be replaced with golden Christmas ornaments while this song would replace the original bonus game theme. Pretty cool cheat!

SuperPhillip's Favorite VGMs - Christmas Eve 2012 Edition

Much like the yearly SuperPhillip Central Best of Awards, selecting songs for the holiday season is a tradition too-- albeit not a tradition that is as long as my awards ceremony. Today on SuperPhillip's Favorite VGMs, I have a special edition to share with you. Think of it as your Christmas bonus from yours truly. It is ten winter-themed video game tracks from games like Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and even some Final Fantasy IX for you RPG buffs out there.

While you enjoy the holidays with your friends and family this season, join the SuperPhillip Central family as we celebrate the season with some SuperPhillip-approved video game songs. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year to you and yours! May your season be merry and bright. With that said, let's get to the music!

v271. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - Ice Cave Chant

The oldest song on this list of ten VGM volumes is from Donkey Kong Country, and it sounds just as good as many of the themes on this list. Although the theme only plays once during Donkey and Diddy Kong's first platforming adventure, the Slipslide Ride level, its impact is astounding. It's an extremely catchy piece full of winter wonder.

v272. Banjo-Kazooie (N64) - Freezeey Peak

A winter wonderland full of angry snowball-chucking snowmen, a family of polar bears in crisis, a bear-hating walrus, cozy cabins, a bright Christmas tree, and a giant snowman with corn cob pipe and yellow and red scarf resting in the center of the level, Freezeey Peak already has that wintry feel to it. The piece that accompanies the level furthers the feeling. Even though a lot of the level wants to see Banjo and Kazooie dead, you can't help but sit back and enjoy Freezeey Peak.

v273. Final Fantasy IX (PS1) - Ice Cavern

Nobuo Uematsu probably composes music in his sleep. That's how much I feel he has mastered his art. Final Fantasy IX features some of my favorite music from the series, and I admire most of the pieces the game uses, despite never having completed the game. Ice Cavern is one of the early dungeons of Final Fantasy IX, and this xylophone-filled piece is what is played during the duration of it.

v274. Tales of Symphonia (GCN) - A Snow Light

The beautiful city of Flanoir is covered in feet of snow. It is a veritable winter wonderland. I cannot help but feel warm and cozy sitting in my room and traversing through the town. With Motoi Sakuraba's A Snow Light playing, the ambiance of Flanoir is only accentuated further. I especially love the piano that plays its descending melodic phrases.

v275. Diddy Kong Racing (N64) - Frosty Village

David Wise should be a familiar fan to Rare fans. He has composed a plethora of soundtracks for the developer such as the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Frosty Village is a rockin' Christmas-sounding tune, perfect for the wintry village that Diddy and the gang speed through. I have many great memories of Diddy Kong Racing. It's only my favorite kart racer of all time, after all!

v276. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (GCN) - Sherbet Land

From one kart racer to another, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is one of my most cherished entries in the Mario Kart franchise. Its dual racer mechanic was fresh and innovative, I loved the track design, and the soundtrack is one of the series's best. Kenta Nagata (who did work on Mario Kart 64 and most recently Mario Kart 7) and Shinobu Tanaka teamed up to compose the cheery music for this game. The end result is tracks like Sherbet Land, that make you hum along and then curse the game for that one blue shell at the final stretch on the final lap.

v277. Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii) - Snowy Fields

Everything about the Snowy Fields track yells "Christmas." We have sleigh bells, regular bells, and a happy disposition. Kirby's Epic Yarn's soundtrack is a terrific one, and it's one of the Wii's best. If you were a music love this generation, you had plenty of opportunities for fantastic music. Kirby's Epic Yarn was just another example of this statement.

v278. Mega Man 8 (PS1, SAT) - Frost Man Stage

The first thing that you generally associate with a level is its aesthetics-- its music, its background, its visuals, and so forth. With Frost Man's level from Mega Man 8, players who go through the level will probably just associate it with one thing, "Jump. Jump. Slide. Slide." The pace of the snowboard sections only quickens, making the computer voice instructing Mega Man on what to do speak even more swiftly.

v279. Paper Mario (N64) - Cold Reception in Shiver City

Two Mario games on the same Favorite VGMs edition? Craziness! Paper Mario was a departure from Squaresoft's Mario RPG, and many consider the game all the better for it. The Paper Mario series is known for its grand humor and timing-based battles. Cold Reception in Shiver City unsurprisingly plays during Shiver City, a frosty town full of talkative penguins.

v280. Viewtiful Joe 2 (PS2, GCN) - Ice Edge (The Polar Movie Land)

If I had but one video game-related wish for this Christmas season, it would be for Capcom to somehow, someway create a new Viewtiful Joe-- a Viewtiful Joe 3. Sure, there was a third game in the series in the form of Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble on the Nintendo DS, but that wasn't of the original's quality. Ice Edge has all the makings of a holiday tune-- sleigh bells and a frosty piano to enjoy.

SuperPhillip's Christmas Haul 2011

Christmas is over and done with like a fast moving snowstorm. With it came lots of gifts both given and received, but more importantly it was a wonderful time spent with the family. I hope your holidays are going well. If not, they'll be over soon enough, so no worries.

As for your favorite superhero/blogger, I received a fair amount of gifts this year. Several Wii, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo 3DS games (a jam-packed January for reviews, anyone?), DVDs like Night Court Seasons 1 and 3 and the Naked Gun 21/2 and 331/3, two Sonic plastic, fully pose-able dolls, a bobble-head stylus of Baby Mario, and several gift certificates and scratch-off tickets. All-in-all I am extremely blessed.

These Are a Few of My Least Favorite Things...

'Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
I was at my computer
Clicking on websites with my mouse
I decided to write up
An article that was about
The things that I detest
Without a shadow of a doubt
From annoying posters
To obnoxious message boards
These are the things I dislike
The amount? Well, how about in hordes?
This isn't your typical Xmas post
It's more negative than most
It's not meant to ruin your holiday
So pardon SuperPhillip, as I am your host.

Memes - These are perfect for people who lack a decent sense of humor so they have to regurgitate ad nauseum jokes that were never funny to begin with. These are people who cannot come up with their own material, so they run to humorless memes. See: GameFAQs, NeoGAF, and any other internet forum. Stop using them, and stop trying to be funny and always failing. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Internet forums - Full of trolls, console warriors, and passive-aggressive posters, forums are the underbelly of the Internet. What good are they? You try to have a discussion and it gets derailed by people who are not smart enough to ignore the obvious flame and/or troll bait. I got to the point where I purposefully got myself banned on every forum I visited so I wouldn't have to suffer using such garbage sites. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

GoNintendo - Ran by a sedentary lumberjack wannabe, this site is a breeding ground for stupid comments, unfunny Internet humor (just see the top right bar on the site), rumors that are usually proven false (there's a reason this POS of a site is banned on NeoGAF), and console warrior posts by the (censors self) man who runs the site. The mods there are tactless 15 year-olds, the prime user base of Nintendo products, so at least that makes sense. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

NeoGAF - There's a good idea behind not posting on these forums. I lurk, and do nothing more than that. The site is ran by mods who troll and allow certain trolls to have free reign to post whatever they want because they sleep with them or whatever. Then you have morons who continuously shout "BELIEVE" and "BOMBA" in every post, use memes constantly after making fun of GameFAQs for doing the same (hypocrites much?), and have just as many console warriors as other forums. They are hardly the elites they think they are. Yes, they are elitist, but they aren't elite. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Michael Pachter - We get it. You're an analyst who gets a six figure salary for being wrong all of the time. Where do I sign up to take your job? I don't get paid to do what I do, and I'm right more than you are. I'll be waiting for my own show, GameTrailers. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

The VGAs - Thankfully anyone outside the United States did not have this on their cable. Video games are already treated like a red-headed stepchild. Now we have Geoff Keighley (I don't care if it is spelled correctly or not) and his VGAs to make the industry look even more immature and pathetic. Teabagging winners? Giving more time to crappy C-list celebrities than the people who design the games we play? It was an embarrassment of a show, and it will continue to be as long as Spike TV has any say in it. "What would you do to improve it?" I dunno, Geoff. How about not suck? Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Microsoft's Kinect - This tech had so much potential, yet it's being used for garbage games. I don't care if it's making the 360 (a system which had the highest failure rate ever) sell well, it's tacky tech, and it's a fad like all of those military and space marine shooters. At least the Wii had games aimed for the core. The Kinect does not. Some games like Dance Central are excellent, but most of the other games seldom read your body movements. It's bad enough that Microsoft basically crapped on their loyal (how anyone is loyal to a company is beyond me) fan base. Kinect is just an insult to injury with low software sales to boot. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Sony fanboys - Now, not every console warrior is the same, so don't think I'm generalizing. You guys were fine last generation, but being from first to worst changed you guys. You're highly obnoxious, trolling everything you can get your Cheeto dust-covered hands on. The PlayStation 3 has a robust and excellent library. Be happy with that. Who cares that it's third place? Apparently you folks do, and you're fools for doing so. Stop being annoying on message boards, play all of those great games, and quit embarrassing yourselves for once. I beg of you. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Nintendo of America's 2011 Wii release schedule - What can you say about several months with little to no (mostly no) games to speak of? Where was Xenoblade to fill in that hole? Yes, it's coming out in April of next year, but the game could have and possibly should have been there to appease those owners of dusty Wii systems. Instead us Americans got games like Wii Play Motion and Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident. Really? Who wants that? Casuals don't even want those games. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Entitled gamers - The 3DS Ambassador program was Nintendo's way of giving a treat to early adopters to their newest portable. However, there is a faction of gamers who don't like the 20+ free games given to them and want more. Really now? They expect Nintendo to give them $80 on a gift card or something like that. Ridiculous. You were the people who decided $250 was worth it for the 3DS. You made your bed, shut up and sleep in it. While you're at it, who the (censors self) crap chute do you think you are? You're not any more special than I or anyone else who was an Ambassador. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Yahtzee - Not the board game-- that's actually entertaining sometimes. Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee is terrific for reviews of games full of wry British humor that fails to be funny. It's just some bloke randomly ranting and hissing air. I got it-- you hate everything. How edgy. How cool. How unfunny. I don't care if you get hits. So does frightening furry art of Sonic the Hedgehog characters in dirty diapers. It doesn't make you any more interesting, nor does talking really fast like the Micro Machines guy. Seriously. Remember that guy? He was hilarious! Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Roseanne's final season - So they won the Illinois lottery. That didn't bother me. The fact that the final season was bizarre and unfunny, well, that sort of got me hot and bothered. Almost all of the show's nine seasons were about a lower class Midwest family. That was cool. I sympathized heavily with that. The blue collar humor and fun relationship between Roseanne and Dan Connor were sensational and hilarious. This last season was just... not anything good. Some episodes were humorous, but those were too few and far in between. Can I get a witness? A what-what? Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

===

Ah... that feels ever so much better. It's not often that you get to see your buddy SuperPhillip "vent", so that was pleasant. It's not good to bundle that up inside of you. You'll get diarrhea! What are your favorite and least favorite things? Feel free to rant inside the comments section.

SuperPhillip's Favorite VGMs - Christmas Countdown Edition

The week is upon us-- Christmas week, and the VGMs are here to celebrate in style! This week we have music from Final Fantasy IX, Diddy Kong Racing, Sonic 3D Blast, Banjo-Kazooie, and The Munchables. So sit tight by a warm fireplace, and enjoy these Christmas-y tunes!

v456. Final Fantasy IX - Kuja's Theme

Kuja is to Zidane as Sephiroth is to Cloud. Except Kuja vs. Zidane isn't milked for all its worth every chance the developers get. Regardless, this piano solo piece is masterfully haunting as it is relaxing. It's Kuja's Theme for Final Fantasy IX on the original Playstation.

v457. Diddy Kong Racing - Walrus Cove

David Wise, longtime composer for Rare, recently left the company. His works include Starfox Adventures, the Donkey Kong Country series, and yes, Diddy Kong Racing. He was relegated to side projects for the longest time that he felt the need to leave. The theme I've selected this time from DKR is Walrus Cove. Perfect for Christmas, no?

v458. Sonic 3D Blast - Diamond Dust Zone Act 1

It's time for a special holiday two-fer. It's been a while since we've had one, so why not bring one out just in time for Christmas? Here's a duo of tracks from Sonic 3-D Blast. It's the wintry wonderland known as the Diamond Dust Zone, and here are the themes of both acts! Rock out, holiday style!

v459. Banjo-Kazooie - Freezeey Peak

Nothing like some video game music to get you into that holiday mood. Here's another track to do just that with Banjo-Kazooie's Freezeey Peak. Who could forget sledding down the slippery slopes, dodging snowballs from five humbug snowmen, or visiting a bashful-to-bears walrus? Of course, you can always light up the Christmas tree in the level, too!

v460. The Munchables - Blue Sky Lounge

We've yet to see The Munchables appear on the favorite VGMs of mine. Can't say that any more as here they are, chomping and consuming all that they see! The Munchables was a Pac-man meets Katamari Damacy type game. This song takes place in an area high above the clouds with cannons! It's Blue Sky Lounge.

Until next week, Merry Christmas!
