SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs - "New Year, New VGMs" Edition

A new year brings a lot of resolutions and potential for a great new beginning. For SuperPhillip Central, my resolution is to be back on a regular schedule. Let's see how many days until I break that...

In all seriousness, happy new year to all of SPC's readers, regular and not, as we jump into 2018. We've already experienced the Review Round-Up, so let's dive into SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs.

This edition begins with two games to chill and relax to: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Stardew Valley. We move from a calming duo of themes to a much more rocking pair with songs from the recently released Sonic Forces and a bonus stage theme from Bomberman on PSP. Finally, Hot Shots Golf 3 tees off and delivers a marvelous piece of music to sit back and nod one's head to in a steady rhythm.

Check out the VGM Database for all past video game themes featured on this weekly segment of SuperPhillip Central. Now, let's get onto the music!

v1536. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (iOS, Android) - Main Theme

Let's begin this edition with some relaxing music, perfect for exploring the cozy and relaxing campsite upon which Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp takes place. Pocket Camp is Nintendo's most recent foray into the realm of mobile gaming, and while it got a fair amount of attention, players aren't really spending too much money on the game. Hence, Nintendo's stock price falling due to investor worries. That doesn't matter, though, as the only currency one should care about in the world of Animal Crossing is that of Bells!

v1537. Stardew Valley (Multi) - Spring (Wild Horseradish Jam)

Don't worry, gang, winter is over in just under three months, and then glorious springtime will be here. In the meantime, let's listen to a song celebrating that blossomy season from Stardew Valley, an indie hit that scratches that itch for a tried and true Harvest Moon-like adventure game on home consoles. Stardew Valley most recently released on the Nintendo Switch, and a multiplayer update is in the works for an impending future release.

v1538. Sonic Forces (Multi) - Fist Bump

Moving on from campsites and farms, we head to the world of Sonic Forces, under heavy control by Dr. Eggman. Hoobastank, a name that takes me back a decade or two, performed the main theme of the game, Fist Bump. I am completely unashamed to admit that I, with no semblance of irony, enjoy this song. Plus, it's not that overheard within the game itself all that much, making it really powerful when it kicks in.

v1539. Bomberman (PSP) - Bonus Stage

A short theme that plays on a continuous loop, this peppy Bonus Stage theme gets you in the mood to bomb as much as possible. After all, you're immune to the explosions in Bomberman's PSP bonus stages, so light up some bombs and go on an explosive spree! Bomberman on PSP's solo mode played out like older Bomberman games, taking out all enemies in each level and occasionally facing a stronger boss. The multiplayer was as delightful as any other Bomberman game (save for Act Zero, of course). Teaming all that up with the infectious soundtrack, as evidenced by this rockin' bonus stage theme, and you have a -- excuse me for using this word again -- explosive package!

v1540. Hot Shots Golf 3 (PS2) - United Forest G.C. (Spring)

Back in the day, students, the Everybody's Golf franchise was known as Hot Shots Golf here in North America. However, in Europe and Oceania it was always known as Everybody's Golf. Now, in North America, with the latest entry on PlayStation 4, Hot Shots Golf is now known as Everybody's Golf as well. Confused? It's okay! We're only here to listen to video game music, after all! Enough with the baffling history lesson, and onto this catchy theme played during the spring season of the United Forest golf course from Hot Shots Golf 3!

SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs - Lots of Catching Up to Do Edition

Generally, SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs are posted on Mondays, but this is a special edition on a Friday of all days, due to some unforeseen circumstances. Being posted on a Friday is really the only major change here this edition, as this week still has five wonderful VGM volumes to engross ourselves with.

We first roll out with the Autobots against the Decepticons with Transformers: Devastation. Then we tangle with Kameo: Elements of Power. Next up, Mega Man X2 takes center stage, followed by a round at the Western Valley Country Club with Hot Shots Golf 3. Finally, Sly Cooper sneaks into this edition with Sly 2: Band of Thieves.

Even though this is on a different day than normal, I won't forget to mention the VGM Database, where all VGM volumes both past and present are conveniently located for your listening pleasure!

v1066. Transformers: Devastation (Multi) - Face the Devastation (End Credits)

Did anyone order some cheese? This is the greatest kind of cheese-- it's low-fat, full of guitar goodness, and complete with high pitched vocals. This song indeed rocks, and it's perfect for capping off the excellence of Activision and Platinum Games' epic Transformers entry, Transformers: Devastation.

v1067. Kameo: Elements of Power (360) - Ice Mountain Onslaught

One of two Xbox 360 launch titles by Rare (the other being Perfect Dark Zero), Kameo: Elements of Power provided a glorious gaming adventure through its epic worlds and confrontations. The soundtrack is also, if you'll excuse me for repeating the word, epic, as well. Steve Burke did a tremendous job with this orchestral soundtrack, bringing a wonderful sense of gravitas to each and every combat situation in Kameo's journey.

v1068. Mega Man X2 (SNES) - Magna Centipede Stage

Mega Man returns to SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs with Mega Man X2 being represented this time around. Magna Centipede's stage takes place in a high tech computer control center, also used in the final stage of the game. Typically the Mega Man X soundtracks are much more hard rock driven than those songs of the classic series, and this song example shows that clearly.

v1069. Hot Shots Golf 3 (PS2) - Western Valley C.C. (Summer)

We may be deep in the winter season here in North America, but that doesn't mean we can't be thinking of summertime, warmer temps, and a lack of snow and ice. Hot Shots Golf 3's Western Valley takes us to the golf course with nice temperatures, nice breezes, and hopefully some hole-in-ones!

v1070. Sly 2: Band of Thieves (PS2) - Museum

Shh... Quietly, now. As Sly Cooper, you need to stealthily saunter around enemies as you progress through Sly 2: Band of Thieves' cleverly designed levels. Sly 2 introduced the ability to play as Bentley and Murray, as well as provided a more open-ended level structure. While the game was still an enjoyable one, I can't help but prefer the original's simplicity and levels over any sequel.

SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs - Back from Cybering Edition

The most important unofficial holiday of all time was yesterday, so SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs had to be out of the office for that! Of course, I'm talking about Cyber Monday. How else do you expect SuperPhillip Central's Favorite VGMs to get half price cutting boards shaped like ducks?! Do you think that kind of deal happens any other day? No way!

Nonetheless, this favorite music-related feature of mine is here for your Tuesday instead of Monday this week. Such games featured this week include Shadow of the Colossus, Tales of Legendia, and Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. Let's go!

v751. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - To the Ancient Land

I start off this edition of my favorite VGMs with the introduction song of Shadow of the Colossus. The composer of this game, Koh Otani, might be familiar to anime fans, as he wrote the music to both Gundam Wing and Outlaw Star. Those are two of my favorite non-Yoko Kanno anime soundtracks. Regardless, Otani-san's (I don't usually do the "san" stuff, so beg my pardon this one time) approach to the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack is a soundtrack full of raw emotion. It's as moving as the game itself.

v752. Tales of Legendia (PS2) - Enemy Attack

Before Motoi Sakuraba became pretty much the de facto composer for the Tales series, Go Shiina had his talented hands on the Tales soundtrack with Tales of Legendia for the PlayStation 2. This lively and energetic Enemy Attack theme is showcased by a brilliant, fast-paced piano melody, followed by lovely strings. It's a gorgeously designed piece, for sure.

v753. Hot Shots Golf 3 (PS2) - Main Menu

Moving away from epic scaled games to the links for a short respite here, the Hot Shots Golf series is one that rarely disappoints. The music also stays strong game after game in the series. Rather than choose a theme from one of the golf courses in the game, I figured I'd share the main menu theme. Not only is it heard a lot obviously while playing, but it constantly gets you in high spirits and in the mood to play another round of golf.

v754. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GCN) - House of Cards

We return to "epic" games and sounding stuff with Baten Kaitos's House of Cards, composed by a name I mentioned in the Tales of Legendia Enemy Attack VGM, Motoi Sakuraba. Not only does this fantastic and masterful composer get around, he consistently makes quality soundtracks. I guess that would be a great reason as to why he gets around so often!

v755. Breath of Fire (SNES, GBA) - Battling

Breath of Fire was one of my first RPG's I ever played. Thus, it has a certain nostalgia I appreciate, but even then, the game still holds up rather well-- at least much better than its poorly-translated sequel. Battling is the second battle theme that plays after Ryu's party has reached a certain point in their adventure. Its much more uptempo than the first battle theme, making it my personal favorite from the game.
