Review Round-Up - April 2013

I am vengeance... I am the night...
I am... the Game of the Month for April 2013!
While SuperPhillip Central only had four reviews for April, the games we did review were top-tier titles. For one, we reviewed Batman: Arkham  City - Armored Edition, the definitive version of Arkham City. That game earned the top score of the month, a 9.5. Following that was Shin'en's Nano Assault EX, earning itself an 8.5. Next up we had Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (9.25), a game that put a smile on our faces from beginning to end. Finally, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate one Wii U and Nintendo 3DS came in and stormed SuperPhillip Central, getting a 9.25 as well for its efforts.

Batman: Arkham City - Armored Edition (Wii U) - 9.5
Nano Assault EX (3DSWare) - 8.5
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) - 9.25
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U, 3DS) - 9.25

Bustin' made us feel good in
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Amazing April: Seven Games to Look Out for This Month

April has arrived, and spring is in full bloom. This month has seven games that SuperPhillip Central has its collective eye on, and ones that we recommend you look into. From DC Comics brawlers to a game inspired by Monster Hunter, these titles seem to be the best that April has to offer. Note: 1) These release dates posted are for North American use, and 2) These release dates are what was planned at the time of this article. Games can always be delayed.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (PS3, 360)
Release Date: 4/2

Releasing today is a game that was thought to be a Wii U exclusive. However, Nintendo only distributed the game rather than assisting in the development like they did with LEGO City Undercover. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is essentially Team Ninja's "redo of" or "another shot at" the original Ninja Gaiden 3. This time around extremities can be cut off, more weapons, new downloadable characters like Ayane, and a new Chapter Challenge mode to increase the replay value of the game. It's great that more people get to play this improved version of Ninja Gaiden 3, and they can do it starting today.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (Multi)
Release Date: 4/16

Take your favorite DC Comics superheroes and villains and put them into a 2D fighter with 3D graphics, and you get Injustice: Gods Among Us, a game coming to Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in the middle of the month. Each fighter has their own unique traits to help them out in battle, arenas are multi-tiered, and the story mode will feature multiple chapters and characters the player assumes the roles of. No doubt comic book fans are looking forward to making some interesting match-ups, and even those with little knowledge of the DC universe will find something to enjoy with Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner -
Soul Hackers (3DS)
Release Date: 4/16

Handhelds this generation have not really had the influx of RPGs that their predecessors had. The situation is better in Japan, but the localized RPGs from there that come to the West are few and far in-between. This month the Nintendo 3DS gets the incredibly wordy Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Soul Hackers, a first-person dungeon crawler RPG set in a world that is a mixture of cyberpunk and something out of an Edgar Allen Poe poem. There's no word on when this game is coming to our European pals, but North American gamers can add a new RPG to their collection on April 16.

LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (3DS)
Release Date: 4/21

The prequel to the Wii U's phenomenal LEGO City Undercover, the 3DS game, LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins looks into protagonist Chase McCain's entry into the LEGO City police force. Contrary to what was believed when the game was originally announced, The Chase Begins will in fact be open-world, with obvious graphical downgrades when compared to its Wii U big brother. We at SuperPhillip Central very much enjoyed the original LEGO City, so we have our eyes on The Chase Begins when it releases April 21.

Dead Island: Riptide (Multi)
Release Date: 4/23

Zombies seem to never get tiring to some people. We've seen multiple Resident Evil games and now The Walking Dead on AMC is as popular as ever. It only makes sense to make more games with the undead brethren that people just cannot seem to get enough of. With a story that picks up where the original Dead Island left off, action RPG mayhem combined with the survival horror genre, and an island infested with zombies, Dead Island: Riptide will place players not in a tropical paradise, but in a tropical hell, two words that most don't put together. These attributes make for a game that intrigues SuperPhillip Central staff, and will no doubt intrigue consumers when it releases late this month.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS3, 360)
Release Date: 4/23

If you didn't get enough of Capcom's Dragon's Dogma that released last year, then prepare your swords, bows, and other weapons for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, a retail release expansion of the original game. This action RPG title features an open world setting with gameplay similar to what you'd expect a cross between Monster Hunter and Dark Souls would be. The game has a slew of Capcom development all-stars on board, including folks who worked on games like Resident Evil 4, the original Devil May Cry trilogy, and Breath of Fire. If you missed playing the original, I can think of no better way to get introduced to the world of Dragon's Dogma than with Dark Arisen.

Soul Sacrifice (PSV)
Release Date: 4/30

I mentioned Monster Hunter in my Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen blurb. Well, here is a game that is without question inspired by Capcom's hot-selling series. The man who co-created Mega Man, Keiji Inafune, is also the brains behind this upcoming PlayStation Vita exclusive, Soul Sacrifice. The game already released in Japan to increased weekly Vita sales. Here's hoping the West gives the system a similar treatment. The four player co-op, massive amount of... well... massive monsters, and wide variety of attacks make for a game that might just be a killer app for the handheld that is struggling to find footing in the marketplace. Soul Sacrifice releases at the end of this month.

===

Also worth note this month is the release of Pandora's Tower, which we mistakenly put in last month's offering of titles to look out for. You can see the blurb written for the game here. Are there any games that you are looking forward to this month that we left out? Let us know in the comments section.

Central City Census - April 2013

It may be April Fools, but there is no fooling around when it comes to SuperPhillip Central's Central City Census. Let's take a look at the results from March before we go ahead with April's poll.

Which announced PlayStation 4 game has you most interested?

I am a bit surprised at the results since there seems to be so much anticipation and hype for the PlayStation 4. Regardless, the "None of them interested me." camp is the one with nearly half the total vote. While I was surprised at that, there's really no surprise that Killzone: Shadow Fall is listed as the top game those who voted anticipate most. Then Knack followed close behind as did Infamous: Second Son. I have to admit that outside of maybe Killzone and Infamous, nothing really excited me about the PS4. Sure, the social features are nice, but without games to compel a person, they're just extra features. Regardless, thanks to everyone who voted this past month. Now, onto April's question.

Although the digital space is growing and virtual purchases and games are rising in popularity, retail is still a significant part of the consumer and video game industry equation. With physical copies of games, you're able to resell or trade them back in if you're through with them and have no intention of keeping them. April's Central City Census asks how often you trade in your games.

April 2012 NPD Results

I hate to end the day on a sour note after we've been having so much fun, but I must. Last month, sales were pitiful. The trend continues with April's NPD results. Let's see how bad they are.

Did you know that the top seven titles of April 2011 all outsold the number one game of this April? It's true. This means both versions of Prototype 2 (there was a Prototype 1?) sold less than 236,000 copies. Some find this hilarious. I don't find the industry doing poorly funny, but I might not be one who wants to watch the world burn either. My shake-my-head award goes to Kinect Star Wars at number two which proves that if you market your product and shove it down people's throats, they will buy it. Kinect continues its dominance in the industry. I must say, I can sort of see why people feared the Wii. I'm doing the same with Kinect. If that's the future, count me out. In other news, Tiger Woods may be doing poorly in real life but his golf games still do well, Mario Party 9 stays at the number seven spot, and Just Dance 3 returns to the top ten. A horrible month for sales.

Review Round-Up - April

As Vanilla Ice once sang, "No, ninja, no, ninja, no!"
The month of April showered SuperPhillip Central with a total of six reviews and/or review segments. However, as you can see by the numbers, it was a month of low-scoring games. We started off with the immensely disappointing bloodbath that was Ninja Gaiden 3. The game turned away from its difficult but rewarding gameplay, and received a 4.0 for it. We rebounded with a more colorful disposition with Mario Party 5 that partied til it got a 7.5. One-Sentence Reviews returned, a popular and innovative segment, for round number three. Then we went back to disappointment with the high-selling but low-rated Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Not even the Resident Evil name could get it anything but a 4.25. An SPC Quickies segment, the eleventh of its kind, was soon followed by the game of the month, a 3DSWare painting application known as Colors! 3D (8.75). I was a particularly harsher reviewer this month than usual. That or the games that I played were just not up to task.

Ninja Gaiden 3 (PS3, 360) - 4.0
Mario Party 5 (GCN) - 7.5
One-Sentence Reviews - Volume Three
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (PS3, 360) - 4.25
SPC Quickies - Volume Eleven - 3D Classics Edition
Colors! 3D (3DSWare) - 8.75

A horde of zombies, some high firepower,
what could possibly go wrong?

April 2012 Nintendo 3DS Playtime Results

One of my favorite features of the Nintendo 3DS is its ability to track playtime results for every 3DS, DS, eShop game and apps. I am hooked to seeing what games I have been playing the most. It has been three months since the last playtime result post, so let's see if new games have cracked the top ten. If you wish to compare, check out January's post. With that, let's get to the results!

10) Resident Evil: Revelations (12:06)

I have a nasty habit of dropping a game as soon as I review it. This was the fate of Resident Evil: Revelations. I was two chapters away from once again beating the game, but newer titles came into my life and Revelations was brushed aside like hair in one's face. I still want to get back to this, and seeing as we are in a month of little to no new releases, April seems like the perfect opportunity to jump back onto that terror-filled cruise ship, hop online for some Raid mode, and unlock some Ooze-killing weaponry. Anyone up for some online play?

9) Pokemon Rumble Blast (12:15)

Pokemon Rumble was a WiiWare game that featured Pokemon in toy form battling it out against one another for supremacy. The addicting nature of that game turned into a retail title for the 3DS, Pokemon Rumble Blast. There were over 600 Pokemon to collect through knocking them out and hoping for the best. The boss Pokemon were particularly tricky to capture as you had only one chance per level to nab them. Triple team battles were introduced in this installment of this spinoff franchise, and they were efforts in frustration near the end of the game. To this day I have not beaten the final boss. It's seemingly impossible!

8) Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (12:17)

Just like last time's playtime results, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D barely edges out Pokemon Rumble Blast by two minutes approximately. The entertaining Mercenaries mode that originated in Resident Evil 4 and continued in the fifth installment came as a standalone game with this 3DS arcade-styled title. In many ways, Resident Evil: Revelations' Raid mode has outdone The Mercenaries 3D. From replay value to the amount of loot and achievements one can try to accomplish. That said, this game is still worth picking up (but not used).

7) The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (13:00)

The only Ambassador game on this list, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is one of my all-time favorite Zelda titles. It took Link to new heights-- albeit extremely small heights, literally. Introducing to the series the ability to shrink at specific points in the overworld and in dungeons (of which there were six in the game) and the funniest companion in the franchise's illustrious history in Ezlo, The Minish Cap has a lot going for it. It isn't too challenging, and there is a small amount of filler, but take this last Capcom-developed Zelda out for spin and you will discover a well made game.

6) Kirby Mass Attack (15:27)

The first Nintendo DS game I played on my new 3DS back in August, Kirby Mass Attack is outclassed only by Kirby Canvas Curse as the best DS Kirby game. It, too, used stylus controls to send a mass of Kirbys to attack enemies, pull heavy switches that one Kirby could only hope to move, and collect medals to not only progress in the game but to unlock several entertaining mini-games. Heck, the mini-games alone could have been their own title, but combined with the main game, Kirby Mass Attack packs a lot of bang for one's buck.

5) Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift (16:25)

Packed with many missions, quests, treasures, enemies to defeat, bosses to battle, and a charming story that doesn't take itself too seriously, Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift is a bright, engaging game that scratches the tactical RPG itch of DS owners. Even though I didn't have the time to give to reach the conclusion of the game, for the time I spent with A2, I did indeed enjoy it. It might not be as dark as the original Final Fantasy Tactics, and it might not be as good, but A2 is a competent addition to the franchise, Luso's blade looking like a giant pizza cutter notwithstanding.

4) Kid Icarus: Uprising (16:49)

The most recent game I have been playing on my 3DS is number four on this list. It's Kid Icarus: Uprising, and the 16:49 playtime is through my playtime only. My older brother hasn't even started his save data, so expect the playtime to go up dramatically. To say Kid Icarus: Uprising isn't in the upper echelon of 3DS titles would be a disservice to the game. It has the most content, features, and goodies out of any 3DS game. The dialogue is a delight, the secrets are numerous, the flight and ground controls (once gotten used to) are splendid, and Sakurai's touch is definitely apparent. If Smash Bros. 4 is half as good as Uprising, Nintendo fans are in for a true treat.

3) Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (25:01)

I am done playing Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, but its extensive amount of playtime will persist and linger on the top ten for a long time most naturally. The game itself was not as good as the previous Game Boy Advance entries, but what RPGs really are? It was amusing seeing the cast of Golden Sun and The Lost Age return in older form while viewing and playing as their offspring. Even with the Nintendo DS system's weak 3D graphics, Dark Dawn still looked awfully impressive when considering technical limitations. It's just a shame that the game is a breeze up until the final boss battle which is crazy as all get out.

2) Super Mario 3D Land (25:08)

Staying at the same amount of playtime as January's results, Super Mario 3D Land is a title that I would soon like to return to. It is the perfect mesh of 2D Mario like Super Mario Bros. 3 and 3D Mario like Super Mario Galaxy. Even when the initial eight worlds are completed, you are not finished. Instead, the big surprise is that you have another eight special worlds to contend with, a playable Luigi, and earning gold flags on every level. That's no simple task. Just look at the 25 hours and 8 minutes that it took my brother and I to accomplish this on both of our save files. Super Mario 3D Land wasn't awarded best handheld game of 2011 for nothing!

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (25:33)

I have a new number one as my most played game, and it is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. I recently started a new save data, and I've been performing much better in regards to finding more Heart Containers, solving puzzles in faster amount of time, and taking down bosses with ease. The Master Quest side of the game still awaits me, and I look forward to the added difficulty of losing more hearts when in battle and the more devious dungeon designs. I thought the puzzles in the original quest were challenging, but I haven't seen anything yet. It says something about the longevity of this game when I can constantly go back to and enjoy it more and more.

Central City Census - April

The end of one month means the beginning of another and the opportunity to gaze upon the results of the Central City Census. What did my readers have to say about March's poll?

How important to you is backwards compatibility in the next gen consoles?

Very. I won't buy one without it.
  19 (35%)
Somewhat. It's good to have.
  26 (48%)
Not very. I can live without it.
  4 (7%)
Not at all. I don't care about BC.
  5 (9%)

Votes so far: 54

The majority of voters feel that backwards compatibility is either a must-have feature or somewhat important. Only nine voters don't really care if this feature is reintroduced into the next generation of consoles. Let's see what April's Census has in store. No fooling around.

There have been rumors (and only rumors) that Sony and Microsoft's next consoles might not allow the ability for players to play used games on them. Would this affect your purchase of their next gen consoles or not? Voting ends at the conclusion of this month.

Mortal Kombat scores a fatality with consumers in the month of April showing that fighting games are back and once again in-style. Following that is Portal 2 on the Xbox 360, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo 3DS continues to have a slow start with its lack of compelling software and similarity to the DSi. It's not looking good for Nintendo's new handheld, but I'm confident that once the games start rolling out this fall, it'll be in better shape.

Review Round-Up - April

X starts a classic gaming empire in Mega Man X.

It's the end of April, so it's time to look back at the month that was review-wise. Once again at SuperPhillip Central we had four unique reviews, one of which was of the retro variety in Mega Man X (9.5). The second best game of the month was God of War: Ghost of Sparta (8.75), the spinoff title featuring Kratos' past. Okamiden (7.5) didn't impress that much while Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (7.0) was pretty disappointing in retrospect. Overall, April was a productive month for SPC.

Okamiden (DS) - 7.5
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP) - 7.0
God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP) - 8.75
Mega Man X (SNES, VC) - 9.5

Inferior to the original Okami, Okamiden was still a fun romp.

Central City Census - April

April Fools' is here, but I have no interest in coming up with a joke for this year. You'll have to look elsewhere for your "humor" today. Instead, let's take a look at last month's Census and see the results.

Do you have an interest in the PSP NGP?

Yes, I'll buy one no questions asked. 6 (16%)
Yes, but it depends on the price/games. 17 (47%)
No, not until more is shown. 4 (11%)
No, I have no interest in the PSP NGP. 9 (25%)

Votes so far: 36

It seems like the most of you are interested, but it depends on the price and/or games. Nearly half of you chose that as your answer. A quarter of you have no interest at all in Sony's new portable, and 16% of you will buy one no questions asked. Let's seek out April's Census.

This poll is rather simple. Which do you use more-- consoles, your PC, Apple products, or traditional portables to play games on?

(*includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

I'm tearing up, it's so abysmal. Wii leads the carnival of tears with under 300,000 consoles sold. On the other end of the spectrum, the PSP is pretty much dead in the water. Now is the time to unveil a successor, Sony. Like anyone from Sony reads SPC, but you know what I mean. Software-wise, the biggest surprise is not seeing Monster Hunter Tri in the top ten. I hate to say I was right, but this does support my statement that third parties squandered the now absent hardcore Wii userbase. Splinter Cell: Conviction takes the top prize with over 450,000 total sales with both Pokemon titles following closely behind. Meanwhile, SPC's Game of the Year for 2009, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, continues to tear up the charts (even in Japan, too). Throw in God of War III and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 with the usual suspects, and you have your April 2010 NPD. Hopefully, next month jumpstarts things with several anticipated titles coming out with Super Mario Galaxy 2 headlining.

Review Round-Up - April

The month of April had several recurring themes. Well, two to be exact. Can you guess what they were? For one, it was a month of retro reviews-- five in all. The best scored retro game, and actually the best scored game of the month, was Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest with a score of 9.0. We also reviewed Mario Golf (9.0), Donkey Kong Country (9.0), Pokemon Snap (7.75) and Yoshi's Story (6.5) which received our lowest score for the month. The other theme was an unintentional one of the Sony variety. Four Sony themed reviews were made. The first being our featured game of April, God of War III, which scored an impressive 9.25. Before that we had SingStar pouring out its heart and soul with stirring vocals at 8.0. Jak and Daxter returned in The Lost Frontier to give us an epic adventure on our PSP, and rightfully receiving an 8.5. Finally, we had some browsing and judging my PSP collection in SPC Quickies - Volume Seven. As for next month, I hope you'll be sticking with SuperPhillip Central because I have some big reviews planned including but not limited to Monster Hunter Tri, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Super Mario Galaxy 2!

All scores are out of 10.
5 = Average

Pokemon Snap (N64) - 7.75
SingStar (PS3) - 8.0
God of War III (PS3) - 9.25
SPC Quickies - Volume Seven - PSParty
Yoshi's Story (N64) - 6.5
Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - 9.0
Mario Golf (N64) - 9.0
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES) - 9.5
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier (PSP) - 8.5

Central City Census - April

It's the start of a new month here at SuperPhillip Central, and no fooling here! Before we get to this month's Census, let's view the results of last month's.

Of the current gen platforms, which have died on you?

Nintendo Wii
16 (13%)
PlayStation 3
21 (17%)
Xbox 360
60 (51%)
Sony PSP
9 (7%)
Nintendo DS
13 (11%)
None have yet
34 (29%)

Votes so far: 117

With 117 unique votes, this edition of the Census allowed for multiple answers as you can see when you add up the total votes. Not surprisingly, the 360 received the dubious honor of having the most votes thanks to the notorious Red Ring of Death. Following that was the Yellow Light of Death for the PlayStation 3 and bricking of the Wii. In second place of the vote our Census users picked that none of their systems have died yet. Congrats to them. I'm so jealous! With that out of the way, let's see what April has in store for our voters.

April's Census is no laughing matter. It's a quick and simple, no-nonsense question. What type of PC do you use primarily-- desktop, laptop, both, or other?

Stay tuned for May for the results!
